Molested for Milk

The rape and sexual torture of female and male cattle.

Just like humans, cows produce milk for their offspring and have strong maternal instincts and bonds with their young. Like all mammals, cows can only produce milk if they are pregnant and for a short period after they give birth. Dairy cows are mothers. If they weren’t mothers, they wouldn’t be “dairy cows.”

In order to keep this milk flowing, dairy cows are forcefully impregnated every year, usually by artificial insemination rather than natural mating. This process requires workers to insert their arm into the cow’s anus to hold her cervix in place while injecting her with semen collected from a bull.

To collect semen from a bull, male cows are either electrically probed anally, hooked up to an artificial vagina, or manually masturbated by workers. This process is so painful that many bulls are unable to ejaculate and instead pass out and fall down. In this event, workers try to collect semen again after waiting a short 15 minutes. No matter their age, bulls are forced to ejaculate upwards of four times a day, several days per week. The semen is then frozen and sold to dairy farms across the country.

Artificial insemination requires dairy cows as young as 12 months old to be forcefully herded by beatings with paddles and rods into “racks” (previously called “rape-racks”) or “crushes” that lock the cow in place with her head confined and her rear exposed to the workers. The workers put on a glove that extends to their shoulder and insert their entire arm into the cow’s anus. They reach through her intestines and push on her cervix to hold it in place as they inject a needle full of the frozen bull semen into her vagina. After this process, inseminated dairy cows are forced through this grueling process until they are confirmed pregnant.

This process is not natural, comfortable, or consensual. The act of insemination is so painful that dairy cows desperately attempt to fight back by using their tails to swat the workers away. To counteract this, workers twist, break, and “dock” (cut off) their tails. However, workers claim severing the cow’s tail has hygienic benefits. This claim has been scientifically disproven.

Once their baby is born, they are forced through the process all over again just 45-60 days after giving birth. To learn what happens to their babies, read “Violated for Veal.” To learn more about the milking process, read “Defiled for Dairy.”

“Call this process whatever you want, but the act of restraining a female and injecting her with semen in order to impregnate her against her will sounds like rape to me.”
